During a performance, a juggler tosses one ball straight upward while continuing to juggle three others. The height f(t), in feet, of the ball is given by the polynomial function f(t) = -16t2 + 27t + 5, where t is the time in seconds since the ball was thrown. Find the height of the ball 1 second after it is tossed upward.
Enter an exact number.
Your answer is correct. feet

EXAMPLE 6 Factor: 3p2 - 4p - 4
Strategy We will assume that this trinomial is the product of two binomials. To find their terms, we will make educated guesses and then check them using multiplication.
Why Since the terms of the trinomial do not have a common factor (other than 1), the only option is to try to factor it as the product of two binomials.
Solution To factor the trinomial, we note that the first terms of the binomial factors must be 3p and p to give the first term of 3p2.

The second terms of the binomials must be two integers whose product is -4. There are three such pairs:1(-4), -1(4), and -2(2). When these pairs are entered, and then reversed, as second terms of the binomials, there are six possibilities to consider.
      -12p       3p
For 1 and -4:     (3p + 1)(p - 4)     (3p - 4)(p + 1)
      p     -4p

      -12p + p = -11p     3p + (- 4p) = -p

      12p     -3p
For -1 and 4:     (3p - 1)(p + 4)     (3p + 4)(p - 1)
      -p     4p

      12p + (-p) = 11p     -3p + 4p = p

      6p     -6p
For -2 and 2:     (3p - 2)(p + 2)     (3p + 2)(p -
Enter a number.
Your answer is correct.)
      -2p     2p

      6p + (-2p) = 4p     -6p + 2p = -4p

Of these possibilities, only the one in blue gives the required middle term of -4p. Thus,
3p2 - 4p - 4 = (3p + 2)(p - 2)
