As long as the test charge is small enough that it does not disturb the surrounding charges, it may be either positive or negative. Compared to a positive test charge, a negative test charge of the same magnitude experiences a force of the same magnitude that points in the opposite direction. However, the same electric field is given by Equation 18.2, in which F is replaced by –F and q0 is replaced by –q0.
